Back in 2016 this;
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Now it’s happening again.
2008 Forester plugged in from 3am to 8am, outside weather is -18C, engine coolant temp is 20C. Car starts first thing, warms up for 10 minutes, drives for 10 minutes, parks at the school, kids get out and get walked in.
Car doesn’t start. Fuel pump sounds, starter goes, engine turns over, won’t run.
1) rtfm suggests 1/4 gas while turning over. nope.
2) rtfm suggests pedal to the floor start. nope.
Wife has enough time to try it 10 more times, text me, get angry, get frustrated, text me to come get her so she’s not late for work. I get 5 minutes away from my office and it starts.
Things that are weird;
I was out on the weekend trying it in the driveway, not plugged in -20C cold start it started 10 in a row, then 20 minutes later another 5 cold starts. I could not get it to have the same trouble as school drop off does.
Newish batt (2016). New plugs (2016). Low mileage since (~1000km).
Runs 100% every day, the rest of the year - no codes, no issues..
Suspect list;
-Coolant temp sensor. Only temp related thing.
-Fuel pump (should be showing other symptoms though?)
-Starter (should be showing other symptoms though?)
Thoughts?

Definite
possibility
, as it seems like a
hit or miss situation.

Not even codes stored in history show up? I would see codes using the onboard diagnostics even though I didn’t have a CEL.
Also, d id your wife take the key in/out when it finally started or was the key always in and started from there ? Definitely an odd one...

I seem to remember this being more of an issue with the fuel level around 1/4 tank or less, it shouldn’t make any difference but it does. The heet helps the water diss
olve into the
gasoline. Probably a good idea to run a bottle through in the late fall as a maintenance item.

It’s got a ScanGauge on it so I can see if there were any codes tonight , no CEL for sure.
Key was always in, she had the pages of the manual out and did the delay between on and start to let the fuel pump prime.
Eventually after 5 minutes it just starts like normal.
Last time it did this it was also due for plugs, while I thought that might have fixed it I also suspect the weather improved and it wasn’t a
problem
anymore. It has been through the 17/18 winter with no issues though

I
t’s a easy precaution - temps have been unusually mild
this winter, mostly above 0C
until this
last week of -20C

Every Subaru I’ve ever had HATED to start in the cold. Even with a new battery, anything below freezing was a gamble. This is four Subies from the 01 to 10 model years. Can’t help you, it’s what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.

Check to make sure the battery terminals are tight?
I had an issue with an old E30 that would run like shit only on hot starts. After replacing ever sensor on that car, I found that the ECU was partially fried (physically melted). I couldn’t imagine that happening on a newer car, but sometimes things that seem temp related, end up being something completely different .

H
a - yeah this one has been a trooper up until now, really we are pretty mild weather wise. I think or normal is 10 days of below -10C a year..

I’m trying to go through the little easy stuff that could be causing
problems, like a dying fob batt, etc
, etc. The pain is it’s an 11 year old car and it could be a lot of little things adding up to a no start. Also hard to replicate the symptoms for a shop to diagnose..

I think you would notice a stumble/misfire if it were plugs or coil packs. Since it’s intermittent and hard to reproduce, maybe start with the cheap and simple and work from there.
Try the school run on a weekend?

Ignition relay maybe.

I would think I would get a missfire or codes from a coil going - or a no start in any other situation as well.
I’ve had coils go on a Jetta before, wet weather misfire and all that, also have had plugs and wires go bad and see symptoms every time the car ran.
I thought I was smart out trying to recreate the symptoms in the driveway over the weekend, I guess I should’ve taken it through the whole routine.

Different car but similar issue. Started no issue 199 out of 200, seemed to be worse/ more likely to not start if i was just sitting in the car for a short period

T he only similar situation I have run into was with my wife’s 05 4cyl Nissan Alitma, (though it didn’t really matter what the temp was outside.) When she attempted to start the car (and only her) it would occasionally flood on warm restarts - flooded so bad that even the foot on the floor thing wouldn’t help - had to let it sit for 20 minutes and then it would work ok. What we eventually figured out is that she would turn the key like she was pushing a button - boop - rather than holding the key until the car fully started. So it would give it fuel but just not quite start. Once we figured that out it never happened again so I’m fairly confident that was our issue...

Interesting, I might see how she’s starting it. Probably best to give it a few days and not bring it up..
I do know that when it doesn’t start she turns it to on, waits, then starts it.. I’ve given her the fuel pump primer story.

On motorbikes a fairly common thing is cracks
on the exterior of
older coils. When the coil is cool(er) no problem. But once they warm up a bit and expand, the cracks can open a
bit,
then the coil can essentially ground out on the frame etc
.. killing the motor.
People think it’s fuel related.. etc... and while they’re checking other things the coils cool off- engine starts, they go 10 min until the coils warm up again- then kaput again ......
I have no idea if this would be applicable
to your
subi... but thought I’d mention- Good luck!

That’s probably #3/4 on the suspect list, These should’ve shown other symptoms on a daily driver though. I would expect stalling, rough idle, etc..
